Twitter and Facebook – Two Rulers of Contemporary Social Networking

May 29, 2009

Though myspace can still drive a sizable size of traffic to your blogs, and youtube marketing is still hot, they are not the favorite kids on the block anymore, so to speak.

Facebook and twitter are social marketing and networking wonders that everybody is talking about. Facebook definitely won it’s share of social market by introducing an easy way for people to share their photos with family and friends and the rest of the world. Sure, sure, it’s much more to facebook than just sharing photos. But INMHO, this particular service was the beginning of the viral avalanche for facebook.

And for twitter – I don’t really know what served as an acceleration momentum that launched this micro-blogging platform in the stratosphere.

May be the fact that 140 characters is much quicker to type than your usual blog post. But yet again, on your own blog you’re not really restricted by the post site. You can make your posts as short as 100 characters if you want.

So that’s probably not it. The multi-platform user interface? Ability to share your thoughts while you’re on your mobile phone? Web interface as well as desktop apps for easy publishing?
Well, all those factors could have some impact, but they don’t sound decisive enough to turn a small networking site to a over-night giant.

Besides, you can publish your blogs through emails, web interface and desktop apps too…

Open api, ability to develop custom twitter apps and aggregate twitter feeds through social aggregators- may be some of those factors were crucial?

But yet again you can aggregate hundreds of social networks through social aggregators, not only facebook and twitter. So that’s probably not it either.

So what is it? I would love to hear your opinion. Please leave your thoughts and commnents.
